The project, developed by students Carla Zeine and Joseph Khattar under the supervision of Dr. Eng. Roy Abi Zeid Daou, presents an embedded monitoring system designed for drivers to detect medical emergencies. A compatible phone application is designed to survey and control the system by using some vital signs sensors such as the heart rate and the SPO2. If a medical failure occurs and the driver is no longer able to continue his trip, an alarm will sound and the car location will be sent immediately to the Red Cross main center. Google maps will display the shortest way to get to the driver.

As usually, the traditional Christmas event at LGU is a very special event that all students, staff, and faculty members take part in adding to the occasion joy, fun, and … a beautiful Christmas spirit.

In line with its social responsibility activities, LGU targeted “Karyat Mariam and other families in need” this Christmas. In fact, we organized an enormous campaign at university to help make this year’s event a very successful one.

We visited Karyat Mariam on Monday 19 December to help children feel the Christmas spirit. We distributed food provisions and Christmas gifts to 37 children and prepared different activities to entertain the little ones who spent over two hours singing and dancing.

On Wednesday 21 December, staff and students also visited more than 10 different families and supplied them with food provisions and Christmas logs wishing them the best for the holidays.

Such activities promote a sense of social awareness among all LGU teams and students towards the environment and the community as a whole and help instill a spirit of compassion towards the less fortunate during this holiday season.

Students at the Faculty of Business and Insurance at LGU organized a conference entitled « The Immigration of Brains » that aims to stress this phenomenon in Lebanon.
Dr. Pierre Khoury, Vice President for Development, inaugurated the conference welcoming all students, guests, and speakers. Then he spoke about the obvious aspect of an immigration that takes place in a country rich in qualified human resources. He also spoke about the multiple factors that make young people leave their home country and which are not restricted to limited job opportunities but extend to security, standard of living, and the quality of services. He explained that this phenomenon is taking place because industrial countries, where revenues are high and science and research encouraged, attract scientists and young researchers. Dr. Khoury insisted that immigration may bring in to the home country cash flow that constitutes a monetary advantage to the government, yet such advantage is artificially boosting the public deficit. Such cash, he added, would be better used to boost the economy than to help cover the public deficit. (read more)

LGU organized a seminar entitled « Walking Through and Towards Quality in Physiotherapy » on Saturday 24 May, 2014. The seminar hosted several professionals in the field who met to discuss how to regulate and standardize the profession.

At the start of the seminar, Dr. Paul Makhlouf, Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, called attention to the growing number of physical therapists in Lebanon due to public awareness of the need for such therapy to deal with old age ailments and various cases requiring specific physical therapy handling. As a result, there is an urgent need for criteria to standardize and regulate the profession.

Mr. Charbel Habib, Head of the Department of Physical Therapy at LGU, spoke about the evolution of education in the field of physical therapy that used to be confined to graduating technicians before it became part of a higher education program recommended by the WCPT, that is a university diploma including a master degree and a professional PhD.

Following that, Mr. Hassan Karaki, Director of the Research Center for Quality in Physical Therapy, spoke about how quality evolved from its being imposed by suppliers of goods and services to its being defined by the consumers of these goods and the users of these services. He also brought up the socio-professional situation of therapists in Lebanon before stressing that the main objective of the Research Center is to find out what therapists’ needs are in terms of training and self-development and to define a profile for the therapist and the needed qualifications he should possess, what pathologies are being treated and medical prescriptions are proposed along with problems relating to social security, retirement, and the overall situation of the profession in rural areas in Lebanon.

In turn, Mr. Joseph Yammine, expert in quality and standardization systems, focused on the preventive and corrective dispositions that should meet the needs of clients. He also described the content of the documentation pyramid that includes the quality manual, the specific procedures for every activity, and the working documents that keep track of what steps have been taken during the therapeutic process. He also defined some terms relating to quality, such as norms, certifications, audits, processes, control, conformity and non-conformity, and corrective and preventive actions.

Following that, Mrs. Rachelle Rassi Daou, physical therapist and expert in health management, stressed the need to meet the patient’s satisfaction, to boost the image of the profession as well as the need to train professionals on the latest innovations in the field so that they are constantly aware of optimal hygiene practices, the risks involved, and how to apply therapies that are effective and cost efficient.

Mrs. Claude Maroun, Director of the Physical Therapy Center at AUBMC, delivered a SWOT analysis of the profession identifying its strengths as being university qualifications and the code of ethics and its weaknesses as lack of regulations imposed by the government and data provided for the purpose as well as lack of funds to finance research in the field ; while the opportunities lie in the willingness of universities to launch research programs ; and the threats in the tendency the profession has to follow an esthetic rather than a therapeutic trend.

Mrs. Maroun also made various recommendations aimed at boosting the profession through carrying out continuous training for the therapists and working towards effective standardization of the profession. She also spoke about how to set objectives for the case in hand and move towards fulfilling these objectives in the best interest of the patient and how to measure the efficiency of the whole process.

Mrs. Lea Tabet, physical therapist and coordinator of the Physical Therapy Department at LGU, spoke about the standards required for accreditation. She also identified the patient’s rights and needs and the delivery of quality therapy by qualified professionals who are respectful not only of the patient’s needs but also of the security of the environment. She also confirmed that in order to deliver quality therapy to patients, the whole process must be measured against reliable performance indicators.

At the end of the seminar, discussions followed on how to implement the criteria regarding the standardization of the profession in a most efficient manner. (photos attached)

(photos attached)

A dedicated young German boy pulls off an elaborate scheme to keep his mother in good health in this comedy drama from director Wolfgang Becker.

Suffering a heart attack and falling into a coma after seeing her son arrested during a protest, Alex’s (Daniel Brühl) socialist mother, Christiane (Katrin Sass), remains comatose through the fall of the Berlin wall and the German Democratic Republic. Knowing that the slightest shock could prove fatal upon his mother’s awakening, Alex strives to keep the fall of the GDR a secret for as long as possible. Keeping their apartment firmly rooted in the past, Alex’s scheme works for a while, but it’s not long before his mother is feeling better and ready to get up and around again.

Visit of Professor Dr. Michel Landry to LGU As An Expert in The DPT Field

As we are aiming for excellence in teaching at the Doctor of Physical Therapy program (DPT), LGU was honored to host another renowned expert in the field, Doctor Michel Landry.
Dr. Michel D. Landry is a Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and in Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina (USA). Prior to his current position, Dr. Landry spent seven years as Division Chief of the Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Division where he successfully implemented an upgrade of the program that has now grown into one of the top physical therapy programs in the United States. Prior to receiving his doctoral degree, he held clinical and senior management positions within the private rehabilitation sector in Ontario (Canada), and within international humanitarian aid and development agencies. Dr. Landry is a health policy and services researcher, and his area of study is the policy implications of the gap between available supply (financial and human resources) and increasing demand for rehabilitation and health services across the continuum of care. He is a Past-President of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and a former Career Scientist at the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC). He lectures widely on policy and the political dynamics of rehabilitation, implications on people with disabilities, and is a provocative advocate for the moral, ethical, and economic necessity to ensure accessible and affordable rehabilitation services across the continuum of high, middle, and low-income countries. Dr. Landry is currently completing his Executive Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, where he is also participating in the Health Sector Management Certificate (HSM).
