Faculty of Public Health - Message from the Dean
Dear Students,
Over two years have now passed and the Faculty of Public Health has made a major step forward in all the departments that were launched in October 2008. Responsibility has increased and so have staff dedication and hard work. The Faculty of Public Health offers six degree programs in Nursing, Nutrition, Medical Science Laboratory, Biomedical Technologies, Physical Therapy, and Medical Imagery. It also provides intensive theoretical and practical courses to help students gain more experience, widen their learning scope, and prepare them for a prospective professional career
The Physical Therapy Department, thanks to the efforts of all its faculty members and staff, has been able to enhance its curriculum. It now provides:
- scientific training, including courses in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pharmacology, psychopathology...
- practical training on methods of treatment from day one;
- lab work teaching evaluation methods, manual approaches, therapeutic exercises, use of physical agents, such as electricity, heat, cold, water and ultrasound equipment;
- excellent clinical training through internships in a variety of clinical settings (hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private clinics);
- partnerships with European universities for postgraduate and PhD studies as well as specific courses abroad.
Moreover, the Physical Therapy Department now boasts a Master’s degree in podology, following the agreement LGU signed with the Ecole de Podologie de Marseille (EPM) on October 15, 2009. Since then, EPM programs have been successfully implemented at LGU by visiting lecturing professors. Such cooperation has also enabled the transfer of scientific knowledge, students’ exchange, summer workshops for LGU students at EPM, the development of specialized curricula, and close follow up by EPM of programs and exams.
The Department of Medical Analysis and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, provide comprehensive training for all students wishing to acquire diversified knowledge in both fields. They also allow them to access the labor market confident of their qualifications and training. The Departments aim to introduce Master and PhD programs in the near future to allow graduate to deepen their knowledge in their fields of studies and to boost their career opportunities.
The Department of Biomedical Technologies has been growing fast. Enrolment increased significantly in October 2009 and again in October 2010, and we expect the trend to continue in the future. A well equipped electronics lab has been established. A Master program is being conceived and agreements with European universities have been signed. Courses involve five main areas: electronics and electricity, physics, mathematics, computer science and anatomy. The degree courses in Biomedical Technologies are spread over three academic years, during which students spend 500 hours in hospitals and radiology centers to become familiar with various biomedical devices.
The Department of Nursing provides training in nursing as a vocation. Students discover the humanitarian aspect of the vocation and are surprised by their ability to soothe and comfort, to sympathize with the suffering of others, and to enhance their skills as they learn. It prepares future health professionals for a very competitive market by helping them acquire the needed skills and a high sense of responsibility. Students are also trained to work in a multidisciplinary team and respond to various needs.
Finally, the Department of Radiology is the latest of LGU innovation. Launched in October 2010, it boasts a program that helps students acquire all the technical skills they need when handling radiology apparatus and tools.
We are confident our Faculty has developed to meet the needs of students and labor markets and we intend to keep up our efforts to ensure continuous progress is carried out in every respect.
