The project « Free Public Health Day » proposed by LGU was selected by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the World Bank to be part of the « National Volunteer Service Program ».
Aware of the importance of prevention and health maintenance, the Faculty of Public Health at LGU organizes two free public health days. This non-profitable project aims to initiate students to voluntary work and develop their sense of social responsibility while practicing their majors requirements (in nursing, physical therapy, medical analyses, nutrition, and biomedical technologies) in order to contribute to the prevention of diseases and the maintenance of a healthy community.
In this perspective, a workshop on « Soft Skills and Career Readiness » is carried out by the Ministry of Social Affairs and LGU in order to initiate students to voluntary work and make them responsible and productive young adults. The dynamic and creative workshop includes, among others, role play, puzzles, drawing and extends over four sessions of six hours each. Seventy students from various Lebanese regions and cultures actively participate to acquire the personal and professional skills needed to make them more open to others, with better communication skills and more efficient integration into community and and social lives.
This project that is not limited to youths training offers two free public health days during which students from various majors make use of the practical skills learned at the workshop and the professional competencies acquired during their university path. On the other hand, faculty members and heads of departments support the students to ensure the two days are carried out successfully.
During these two days, the community is invited to do various tests, including those relating to glycemia, triglyceride, cholesterol, blood group, Helicobacter Pylori, as well as other tests such as spirometry, podology, osteo-densitometry and body composition. Dentists, nutritionists and professional physical therapists are present to provide consultations and personalized advice. Doctors are also there in order to do the screening and prescribe what tests or treatments are needed.
This non-profitable project surely initiates students to voluntary work and develop their sense of social responsibility in order to contribute to the prevention of diseases and the maintenance of a healthy community.
